President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, yesterday for the first time spoke on the controversial $9.3m cash allegedly smuggled into South Africa by two Nigerians and an Israeli using his private jet. The money which has been confiscated by a South African court was meant for the purchase of arms for the Nigerian Intelligence Services.
Reports circulating in the city allege that actress Ini Edo’s marriage has crashed. This will not be the first time media reports will indicate that the beautiful actress’ marriage is troubled. This time, however, there actually seems to be fire on the mountain
Information filtering into Bravo magazine has helped to unravel the hidden agenda behind Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s do-or-die frame of mind, regarding his highly unpopular decision to force Akinwunmi Ambode down the throats of Lagos APC, as his choice of successor to Gov Fashola.
Of course, it is no longer news that Ambode was Tinubu’s Accountant General, whilst the Jagaban was governor of Lagos State.
According to Bravo’s findings, just as it happened in the case of Babatunde Raji Fashola in 2007, sources reveal that the first reason Tinubu chose Ambode is the same reason he chose Fashola back then.
Both men are no politicians (technically speaking) and thus did not own any political structures as at the time of being picked. As everyone knows, Gov Fashola is a technocrat who had no choice but to learn fast on the the job after becoming governor.
This ability to think fast on his feet saved the integrity of his government as Tinubu was allegedly on his back, persistently seeking to grab as much as he could from the revenue of the state.
Again it is no secret that this guts, this temerity displayed by Fashola who stubbornly stood his ground in the face of Tinubu’s temper tantrums, threats and intimidation caused a bitter battle of attrition that lasted between both men till 2011 when the AC elders had to step in to douse the embers of war.
Otherwise Tinubu, who carries on as if he has Lagos APC in his back pocket had been bitterly bent on denying BRF a re-election.
Now, besides choosing Ambode for the reason that he is not a politician, (and therefore won’t give the godfather any sleepless nights), the other crucial reason Asiwaju has chosen the accountant, according to an inside source is that both men have worked together in the past as ‘oga’ and ‘obedient accountant’.
Thus, the concern amongst political watchers in Lagos State is that, for a Tinubu who has a record of being investigated for forgery; a reputation for attempting to coerce Fashola into diverting the state’s resources into his already bulging accounts, having a grateful lap-dog like Ambode as governor might be disastrous for the Lagos treasury, to say the least.
The conclusion among many observers is that, with a fearless, no nonsense leader like Fashola out of the way, and having no one to challenge his greed, Bourdillon (where Tinubu resides) might very well become the new Lagos State treasury.
For his part, Bola Tinubu has not helped to assuage this disturbing feeling, given the do-or-die mode in which he has gone about with the preparation for validating the candidature of Ambode as the Lagos APC flagbearer.
Currently with the EFCC is a petition to the effect that the princely sum of N25m is being deducted monthly from Local Government coffers towards Ambode’s campaign funding. A total of N1.4b taken brazenly, outrageously, illegally from the resources of 57 local government councils in the state.
Before this petition a previous petition had surfaced complaining of the deduction of a whopping N2b from these local government councils. The troubling question on the lips of most observers is: in what manner will Ambode pay this huge debt of gratitude if eventually he emerges as governor of the state?
The situation is worsened by the worrying discovery that Ambode had initially attempted to pass himself off as an indigene of Epe in Lagos State. While the law allows Nigerians to be able to run for election in any part of the country after having lived there for a required period of years, most Lagosians are saying they would prefer to be governed by one of their own
Meanwhile Ambode remains doubly grateful to Asiwaju Tinubu for helping him fight and win this indigene-or-no-indigene battle. That is if he emerges victorious over the agitating Lagosians.
Beyond this, the fact is that Ambode has started on the wrong note by lying in regard to his true origins. The other troubling question is: if he has lied in this little matter, is he someone Lagosians can trust to tell the truth in more important issues?
As at the time of filing this report what some Lagosians have said to Bravo is that, if the APC in Lagos cannot present a candidate devoid of controversy, perhaps they would think of the bigger picture and allow the PDP to give Lagosians either Obanikoro or Jimi Agbaje.
The Nigerian military once again made a u-turn when the director, Defence Information, Brig Gen Chris Olukolade retracted an earlier statement that claimed that a number of the abducted Chibok girls had been freed.
The House of Representatives was sharply divided, yesterday, with All Progressives Congress, APC, members staging a walk-out over failure of the House to commence debate on the $9.3 million cash that was allegedly smuggled into South Africa by two Nigerians and an Israeli for the purpose of purchasing arms for the Nigerian Intelligence Service.
